Abstract

The study aimed to identify the role of social television in shaping the attitudes of Yarmouk University students toward issues of community violence and the effects resulting from this role. The theory of relying on the media was used. The survey method was employed using the questionnaire tool by distribution to an available sample of (384) individuals from Yarmouk University students. The study concluded: The percentage of those who watch social TV is (86.1%) for several reasons, the most important of which is: “The content is clear, objective and accurate.” The percentage of those who watch social content via the Internet, spending 3 hours or more, is (39.7%), and the majority are females, with a rate of (71.8%). The study also concluded that domestic violence is the most crucial topic students follow on social television. And it was represented in highlighting the cognitive effects of what the culture of Western society contributes to, which is provided by social television, reflected in the increase in societal violence. At the same time, the emotional effects were represented in the student’s knowledge of the violence occurring in his society, which increased the level of fear and anxiety in his dealings with new people in his life thus limiting his enthusiasm to engage with new people, and accept others.
