Journalistic Coverage of the Phenomenon of Cyberbullying in Jordanian Electronic Media: An Analytical Study
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the coverage of cyberbullying in Jordanian electronic journalism, focusing on the causes and effects of this phenomenon as presented by digital media outlets. The research specifically explores the journalistic frameworks employed in addressing cyberbullying, identifying key topics covered by Jordanian newspapers, and evaluating the common coverage patterns and their influence on public awareness. The study sample includes two prominent Jordanian newspapers: Al-Ghad (Arabic-language) and The Jordan Times (English-language), over the period from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023.
Using content analysis as the primary research method, the study reveals that verbal bullying is the most frequently covered form of cyberbullying in Al-Ghad, while The Jordan Times highlights social bullying. The findings indicate that entertainment and play are the leading reasons behind cyberbullying, with the psychological impacts on victims being the most significant. Additionally, the study shows that community-based efforts were emphasized in Al-Ghad’s coverage, whereas The Jordan Times focused on educational initiatives.
The study concludes with recommendations, including the need for balanced media coverage of various forms of cyberbullying, more attention to the psychological and social factors contributing to the phenomenon, and greater awareness of legal frameworks. It also encourages the use of diverse journalistic techniques, such as investigative reporting and infographics, to provide more comprehensive coverage.
