Abstract

The study aimed to analyze and evaluate the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) as a function to measure drought conditions in the highland strip region in the central region of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan using remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems, during the period 1985-2023, based on satellite visual data. And the annual rates of rainfall from climate magazines. The study concluded that the area of green areas in the study area decreased from 246.9 km² in 1985 to about 9.3 km² in 2023, and the cases and levels of drought varied during the period 1985-2023, as the absence of drought declined significantly, as It reached 2190.7 km², representing 93.6% of the study area in 1985, while in 2023 at the end of the study period it reached 150.4 km2, representing 6.4% of the study area, and thus it was replaced by extreme, severe, moderate, and mild droughts. The study recommended the need to pay attention to green areas and agricultural lands, especially when developing policies related to building permits or by increasing awareness among the local community and paying attention to water harvesting projects.
