Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the guided discovery strategy on the acquisition of selected basic football skills among female students of the Faculty of Physical Education at Yarmouk University. To achieve this purpose, the researcher employed an experimental design based on equivalent groups (experimental and control). The study sample consisted of (30) female students enrolled in the Football Teaching course during the second semester of the academic year (2021/2022). The sample was selected purposively and then randomly assigned into two equal groups, with (15) students in each group. The experimental group received an instructional program based on the guided discovery strategy to learn the following skills: dribbling, accurate passing, shooting, and throw-in, whereas the control group was taught the same skills using the traditional teaching method applied in regular lessons. The instructional program was implemented over a period of four weeks, with three instructional sessions per week, each lasting (45) minutes. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results revealed statistically significant differences in the post-test scores in favor of the experimental group, indicating the effectiveness of the guided discovery strategy in improving the learning of selected basic football skills. Based on these findings, the study recommends adopting the guided discovery strategy in teaching basic football skills to female students in faculties of physical education, due to its positive impact on skill performance and learning motivation. The study also recommends conducting further research on other sports and different age groups.
